The Shadow Never Leads, Part 2: The Tangled Knot
Not everyone who asks is in crisis. Part 1 was written for 3am. This part is written for the people who finished Part 1 and had follow-up questions about rebel midwayers, channeling, and what the UB actually says about beings near the human level.
Series Note: This is Part 2 of a seven-part series exploring how a sabotaged biological mission left humanity running on compromised neurological hardware, and why the Father's countermeasure is already in place. Part 1 laid out the pastoral core: who is with you, what to do at 3am, the shadow as absence not substance. Part 2 goes deeper into the cosmology of that question. Real beings exist. False perceptions also exist. And the distance between them is proportional to how much you actually know.
Not Everyone Who Asks Is In Crisis
Part 1 was written for 3am. This part is written for the people who finished Part 1 and had follow-up questions.
The questions sound like this: If rebel midwayers are in custody, why do people still report paranormal experiences? If Caligastia can't enter minds, why does spiritual warfare feel so real? If the Hat Man is a hallucination, what about the experiences that aren't? What about the people who got involved in channeling and it went badly? What about Chris Bledsoe? What about the UB reader who's convinced their Thought Adjuster is giving them revelations that everyone else should follow?
These are real questions. They deserve real answers, not a reassuring paragraph about the Spirit of Truth that sidesteps the complexity.
The UB has a framework for all of this. It's not always comfortable. It requires holding two truths at once: real beings exist and operate near the human level, AND the human capacity for self-deception is genuinely extraordinary. The messy knot is that both things are true, and no external authority can untangle your specific situation for you. That's the cosmology.
What the UB Actually Says About Beings Near the Human Level
Let's establish the architecture first, because most of the confusion comes from people either overclaiming ("I'm being attacked by demons") or underclaiming ("there are no real beings and it's all psychology"). The UB lands in a very specific place that is neither of those.
The United Midwayers
The Urantia Book describes 10,992 loyal midway creatures currently operating on this planet. They are real beings. They exist, in the language of Paper 77:
The 1,111 loyal secondary midwayers are engaged in important missions on earth. As compared with their primary associates, they are decidedly material. They exist just outside the range of mortal vision and possess sufficient latitude of adaptation to make, at will, physical contact with what humans call "material things." These unique creatures have certain definite powers over the things of time and space, not excepting the beasts of the realm. (77:8.11)
"Just outside the range of mortal vision" is the phrase that matters. These beings are real, material enough to affect physical things, and operating near the human level. They are not abstractions. They are not metaphors. They are beings.
They are also not your servants, your spirit guides in the New Age sense, or beings whose attention can be commanded. They are engaged in specific missions coordinated with seraphic and Adjuster ministry. They are working in the context of a planetary administration, not as freelancers responding to individual human requests.
The Rebel Midwayers: What Changed at Pentecost
Before Pentecost, things were different. The 40,119 primary midwayers and 873 secondary midwayers who joined the Caligastia secession were capable of something the loyal midwayers still avoid: influencing the minds of certain individuals directly. The text is specific:
On no world can evil spirits possess any mortal mind subsequent to the life of a Paradise bestowal Son. But before the days of Christ Michael on Urantia, before the universal coming of the Thought Adjusters and the pouring out of the Master's spirit upon all flesh, these rebel midwayers were actually able to influence the minds of certain inferior mortals and somewhat to control their actions. (77:7.5)
The operative phrase is "subsequent to the life of a Paradise bestowal Son." We are on the other side of that line. This is settled. The entire group of rebel midwayers is presently held in custody:
The entire group of rebel midwayers is at present held prisoner by order of the Most Highs of Edentia. No more do they roam this world on mischief bent. Regardless of the presence of the Thought Adjusters, the pouring out of the Spirit of Truth upon all flesh forever made it impossible for disloyal spirits of any sort or description ever again to invade even the most feeble of human minds. Since the day of Pentecost there never again can be such a thing as demoniacal possession. (77:7.8)
This isn't ambiguous. Demoniacal possession as a category of experience ended at Pentecost. Not weakened. Ended. The spirit prison population that could do that is in custody. "No more do they roam this world on mischief bent" is as direct as UB language gets.
So where does that leave contemporary paranormal reports? Exactly where the UB places them:
In general, when weak and dissolute mortals are supposed to be under the influence of devils and demons, they are merely being dominated by their own inherent and debased tendencies, being led away by their own natural propensities. The devil has been given a great deal of credit for evil which does not belong to him. Caligastia has been comparatively impotent since the cross of Christ. (53:8.9)
Caligastia: Still Free, Still Impotent
One canonical lock deserves explicit statement before we go further. Caligastia is still free on this planet. He was not imprisoned at Pentecost. He refused the Teacher's offer of mercy:
Caligastia, your apostate Planetary Prince, is still free on Urantia to prosecute his nefarious designs, but he has absolutely no power to enter the minds of men, neither can he draw near to their souls to tempt or corrupt them unless they really desire to be cursed with his wicked presence. (53:8.6)
Two things are simultaneously true here. Free and impotent. Free to influence environments, cultural systems, institutional patterns, the broad structural currents of planetary life. Impotent at the level of individual minds. This distinction is the entire architecture of spiritual discernment for anyone who has been told they're under personal spiritual attack.
The question worth asking is not "is Caligastia attacking me?" The answer to that is no, he cannot. The question worth asking is: "What structural systems, cultural patterns, and compromised institutions carry his fingerprint, and am I swimming in those currents without knowing it?" That's the actual threat. It's systemic, not personal.
The Spectrum of Experience
Here's the tension that doesn't resolve cleanly: all of the above is true, AND genuine spiritual experience is also real, AND the human capacity for self-deception is enormous, AND the Adjuster is genuinely communicating, AND most people can't reliably distinguish their own psychology from that communication.
The Urantia Book doesn't pretend this is easy. It says, bluntly:
It is extremely dangerous to postulate as to the Adjuster content of the dream life. The Adjusters do work during sleep, but your ordinary dream experiences are purely physiologic and psychologic phenomena. Likewise, it is hazardous to attempt the differentiation of the Adjusters' concept registry from the more or less continuous and conscious reception of the dictations of mortal conscience. These are problems which will have to be solved through individual discrimination and personal decision. (110:5.5)
"Individual discrimination and personal decision." No external authority resolves this. Not a UB study group leader. Not a channeled being. Not a teacher, pastor, or revelator-in-residence. You have to do the actual work of discernment, and the text explicitly says it's hazardous to try.
That word, hazardous, is doing a lot of work. It doesn't say "impossible" or "forbidden." It says hazardous, meaning the risk of error is real and the consequences of getting it wrong matter.
The Confusion Test
One of the most practically useful passages in the entire UB for people navigating inner life is this one, which almost nobody talks about:
Confusion, being puzzled, even sometimes discouraged and distracted, does not necessarily signify resistance to the leadings of the indwelling Adjuster. Such attitudes may sometimes connote lack of active co-operation with the divine Monitor and may, therefore, somewhat delay spiritual progress, but such intellectual emotional difficulties do not in the least interfere with the certain survival of the God-knowing soul. Ignorance alone can never prevent survival; neither can confusional doubts nor fearful uncertainty. Only conscious resistance to the Adjuster's leading can prevent the survival of the evolving immortal soul. (110:3.5)
Most people in spiritual distress are not consciously resisting the Adjuster. They are confused. They are puzzled. They are sometimes discouraged and distracted. The text says: that’s okay. That’s normal. Confusion is not the same as resistance. Being lost doesn’t mean you’ve gone off course permanently. The Teacher described evil itself as a shadow, not a substance: it arises where something finite stands between the creature and the light. Confusion is not a shadow you cast. It is the normal condition of a finite creature navigating a compromised planet without its intended upgrade. The pilot is still there. The ship has not sunk.
This matters enormously for the person who is afraid that their experience of shadow people, or their pattern of addiction relapse, or their inability to feel the Adjuster’s presence, means something has gone permanently off course. It hasn’t. The text says so.
How Rarely the Voice Comes
There's a passage that deserves to be quoted to every person who's been told their genuine spiritual experience should include regular, direct communication from their Thought Adjuster:
While the voice of the Adjuster is ever within you, most of you will hear it seldom during a lifetime. Human beings below the third and second circles of attainment rarely hear the Adjuster's direct voice except in moments of supreme desire, in a supreme situation, and consequent upon a supreme decision. (110:7.9)
Seldom during a lifetime. That's the actual standard the text sets. Not daily. Not in response to focused meditation on a regular schedule. Not reliably in any particular format. Seldom, in moments of supreme desire, in supreme situations, consequent upon a supreme decision.
Anyone claiming to receive regular, detailed, specific, actionable content from their Thought Adjuster should be met with gentle and firm skepticism. Not hostility. Not dismissal of their experience. Skepticism, because the text says this is not how it works for most people, most of the time.
The Channeling Cautionary Tale
This is the part of the article that's going to make some people uncomfortable, and I'm going to write it anyway, because the people who need to read it are being harmed by its absence from the conversation.
The Pattern
The Urantia community has had a front-row seat to a recurring pattern that plays out with painful consistency. The pattern looks like this:
A person or group of people with genuine hunger for spiritual truth, combined with significant familiarity with UB cosmology, combined with some compromised element of their inner life (whether through trauma, personal grievance, power hunger, sincere self-deception, or all of the above), begins to receive messages they believe are from midwayers, Adjusters, celestial artisans, or other supermortal beings. The messages are cosmologically literate enough to feel authentic to UB readers. They claim special authority. They identify the receiver as uniquely important to planetary administration. They expand over time, becoming more elaborate, more specific, more demanding of the receiver's centrality.
And then people follow them. Because the hunger is real, the cosmological language is familiar, and humans are extraordinarily susceptible to the appeal of special revelation.
The UB is explicit that this susceptibility exists. The Adjuster material in Paper 110 is not a certification of channeled content. It's a warning about the difficulty of discrimination. The pattern keeps repeating because the warning keeps getting ignored.
Christy and the Post-Publication Problem
The most consequential instance in UB movement history began with the revelators themselves, or at least with someone close to them. Christy (Emma Christensen) was a member of the original contact commission. After publication, she began claiming ongoing midwayer contact with no mandate from Uversa. She elevated Harold Sherman, then Vern Grimsley, through what she presented as channeled confirmation of their roles.
Vern Grimsley had genuine spiritual gifts, genuine passion for the UB, and genuine love for the people around him. He also believed he was receiving transmissions from midwayers in the 1980s. The messages told him nuclear war was imminent. People in the UB community sold their homes and gathered for safety based on those transmissions. The war didn't come. The movement split.
Grimsley isn't a villain in this story. He's a cautionary illustration of exactly what the text warns about: genuine hunger plus cosmological knowledge plus compromised discernment equals a platform for self-deception with real consequences for real people.
Ron Besser and the Teaching Mission
The Teaching Mission emerged in the 1990s, built around the claim that a group of celestial teachers had been assigned to transmit-receivers (T/Rs) in the UB community. Ron Besser became one of the movement's most prolific transmitters, producing enormous volumes of content attributed to Monjoronson, Machiventa Melchizedek, and other beings named in the UB.
The content was cosmologically sophisticated. It used UB terminology fluently. It addressed real spiritual questions. It also claimed to speak with an authority that the actual UB text never claimed for post-publication transmissions.
The movement created a secondary literature that, for many participants, competed with and eventually replaced the actual UB as their primary source. That's the structural outcome to watch for in any channeling system: when the channel becomes more authoritative than the source, the source has been replaced.
Gabriel of Sedona: The Extreme Case
Anthony Delevin, who called himself Gabriel of Sedona, represents the far end of this spectrum. He built a full residential community around his transmissions. He claimed the authority to interpret and apply UB teachings in ways that required direct obedience from community members. The community became, by multiple accounts, a controlling and abusive environment.
I knew his daughter Sanskrita personally. She escaped the community. She later died in a fire. Anthony Delevin died on August 8, 2025.
That's what the far end of this pattern looks like. Not every channeling situation becomes Gabriel of Sedona. But Gabriel of Sedona didn't start as Gabriel of Sedona either. It started as a person with cosmological knowledge and genuine spiritual hunger who found a mechanism that put him at the center of revelation.
Chris Bledsoe and the Harder Question
Chris Bledsoe is a different kind of case, and he deserves to be treated differently.
Bledsoe is a North Carolina businessman and lifelong Christian who has had recurring contact experiences since 2007, verified by multiple witnesses and investigated by government agencies. His experiences include physical phenomena, predictive information that proved accurate, and what he describes as profound spiritual uplift. He has not built a following around himself as a revelatory authority. He has not used his experiences to claim special cosmological status. He seems genuinely baffled by what has happened to him and genuinely reluctant to make it about himself.
Is the Bledsoe case reconcilable with a UB framework? Maybe. The loyal midwayers do exist. They are described as beings "just outside the range of mortal vision" with real physical capacities. They are described as contact personalities, as the beings used to transmit the UB itself. The text doesn't say they never operate in ways that produce observable, investigable physical phenomena.
What the Bledsoe case doesn't justify is the leap from "real anomalous experience" to "I know what these beings are and what authority they represent." The honest position is: real experiences can be genuine without being correctly understood. The midwayer architecture provides a framework in which some anomalous human experiences make sense. It does not provide a certificate of authenticity for any particular claim.
The Diagnostic Question
After all of this, how do you tell the difference between genuine leading and counterfeit? The UB doesn't give you a checklist. But it gives you a direction.
Paper 110 says the Adjuster works toward one goal: Adjuster fusion, the evolution of an immortal soul that willingly chooses to do the will of the Father. Everything the Adjuster communicates points in that direction. The Adjuster has no agenda of its own that competes with the Father's will. It has no message that places you at the center of planetary significance. It has no transmission that requires you to submit to an external authority claiming to speak on its behalf.
The seraphic guardians coordinate with Adjusters but never override human will. They "do not invade the sanctity of the human mind" (113:5.1). They influence environment. They manipulate circumstances. They care so deeply that they figuratively weep when you make choices that harm your soul's progress (113:5.2). But they do not dictate. They do not demand.
Any communication that places a human being at the center of a special planetary mission, demands submission to a human transmitter, claims to supersede the UB text itself, or requires action inconsistent with the character of the Father as described by the Teacher is not coming from where it claims to come from. The Father of the UB does not work that way. The Teacher's description of the Father makes this clear throughout Part IV.
The mark of genuine leading, as best the text describes it, is that it makes you more loving, more free, more honestly yourself, more capable of doing the Father's will in your specific life. Not more cosmically important. Not more special. More genuinely you, more genuinely his.
Voice-to-Skull and the Modern Paranoia
One question that appears in modern spiritual distress discussions deserves a direct address because it's become genuinely prevalent: what about electronic harassment? What about voice-to-skull technology? What about the possibility that the voices and intrusive thoughts some people experience have a technological origin rather than a spiritual or psychological one?
This is a real technology. Directed energy weapons exist. Governments have researched them. The history is documented.
And it is also true that the overwhelming majority of people who believe they are being targeted by such technology are experiencing psychosis or paranoid delusional disorder, often exacerbated by stimulant use. The belief that one is being electronically harassed is a documented presenting symptom in psychiatric emergency contexts. This is not dismissive. It is the documented clinical reality.
The UB framework adds something useful here. Paper 86 describes anxiety as "a natural state of the savage mind" and traces the entire history of ghost fear from its evolutionary origins. The human threat-detection system is ancient, powerful, and, after the double default this series documents, running without its intended biological upgrade. When that system is activated without a clear external cause, it generates explanations. Ghosts. Demons. Government surveillance. The explanatory framework changes with culture and era. The underlying neural mechanism is the same.
Anxiety was a natural state of the savage mind. When men and women fall victims to excessive anxiety, they are simply reverting to the natural estate of their far-distant ancestors; and when anxiety becomes actually painful, it inhibits activity and unfailingly institutes evolutionary changes and biologic adaptations. (86:2.1)
The person experiencing intrusive thoughts, perceived surveillance, and the conviction that they are being targeted is not imagining their distress. The distress is real. The suffering is real. The neural mechanism generating it is real. What is in question is the cause, and the honest answer is: the cause is almost certainly internal, not external, and almost certainly downstream of the compromised neurology this series describes rather than downstream of targeted harassment by governments or rebel spirits.
That framing is an act of care, not dismissal. It points toward help. The "I'm being targeted by external agents" framing closes the door on help by mislocating the problem.
What to Do With All of This
Part 1 gave you something to use tonight. This part has given you something more difficult: a framework with no clean resolution, a cosmology that acknowledges real beings and real self-deception simultaneously and refuses to simplify either.
Here's what that framework actually calls for:
Genuine experiences don't need a grand cosmological explanation to be valid. Something can be real and still be correctly understood as a normal, if intense, spiritual experience. The Adjuster is working in you. Your seraphic guardian is coordinating your environment. The Spirit of Truth is available to every sincere heart. None of that requires you to be at the center of a special planetary mission.
Skepticism about channeled content is not spiritual immaturity. It is the position the text itself recommends. The text that contains the most precise cosmological framework any human has ever received was delivered through a process that explicitly said it would not be repeated. The publication mandate was not a technicality. It was a structural protection against exactly what followed when it was ignored.
Genuine confusion, puzzlement, discouragement, and distraction are not signs that something has gone off course. They are the normal condition of earnest spiritual growth. The Adjuster is patient. The guardian is faithful. The Spirit of Truth is available. None of them require you to have it figured out.
If someone is claiming to receive detailed transmissions that place them in a position of spiritual authority over you, or that require you to submit to their interpretive framework, or that claim to supersede the UB text itself, you have both the right and the responsibility to evaluate that claim with the full critical capacity the Father gave you. The Adjuster does not bypass human reason. Neither should you.
And if the shadow people come, or the anxiety rises, or the voices intrude: remember Part 1. Your Adjuster has not quit. Your guardian has not been recalled. The Spirit of Truth was not given to you by an institution that can revoke it. You are not alone, and you are not uniquely targeted, and the shadow is not leading you anywhere.
Turn toward the light. Let the shadow fall behind.
Where This Series Goes Next
Part 3, "Emergency Firmware," moves from cosmology to neuroscience. We're going to look at what drugs, social media algorithms, environmental toxins, and processed food actually do to the brain. Not as a lecture. As an explanation of why the anxiety is so persistent, why the fear circuits are so loud, and why Adjuster communion is so difficult for so many people in the modern world.
The UB names the mechanism at 110:4.5: "The Urantia races are so largely electrically and chemically controlled, so highly animallike in their common behavior, so emotional in their ordinary reactions, that it becomes exceedingly difficult for the Monitors to guide and direct them." The neuroscience fills in what "electrically and chemically controlled" actually looks like in a brain running on emergency firmware in a world that monetizes neurological exploitation.
That part is not comfortable either. But it is necessary. And it points toward the same place this part does: toward the countermeasure the Father put in place before any of this started, the one that requires only sincerity to access.
